“When debut author, Lauren Trevan, asked me to read her book, I’ll admit, I was torn. I love to support new and established Australian authors, but with a physical TBR that is in the hundreds, there’s a certain risk with putting time aside to read a book you don’t know anything about.
But sometimes those risks pay off.
Before I get into my review, I’ll tell you that this book was not always an easy read for it’s dark subject matter. But it’s an important read for precisely that same reason. As Lauren says in her acknowledgements, we shouldn’t sweep these issues under the carpet but rather speak about them to give victims the power to also speak up and feel supported.
This book follows the story of Jess Foster, a young, vibrant and smart young woman who we meet at the age of 19, shortly before she meets Julian Rundell at her local sailing club. Julian is almost a decade older than her, he’s good looking, charming, a skilled sailing coach and everyone loves him. It doesn’t take Jess long to fall under his spell, and it also doesn’t take long for the exciting romance to take a dark turn.
I won’t say more about the plot, but I will say that Lauren manages to illuminate the initially subtle coercive control in the relationship with a convincing voice, showing us that domestic abuse doesn’t always have to be physical to be frightening and debilitating.
I know this book won’t be for everyone, sadly for some it may be too close for comfort. But if you think you can handle the subject matter, give it a read.
Although Lauren released this book through a small publisher a year ago, she has regained the rights to re-release it herself.
If you too feel reluctant to read a book by a debut author you may never have heard of, let me recommend this powerful and important debut that is beautifully written and compellingly interesting.”

Julian’s unexpected entrance into Jess’s life in Lauren Trevan’s Now I See You marks the beginning of a journey filled with emotional upheavals and dramatic twists. Portrayed as a refreshing contrast to her distant boyfriend, Julian emerges as a figure of kindness, care, and maturity, seemingly indifferent to their age gap. However, the novel skillfully unravels the complexity of their relationship, turning a promising romance into a story of determination and resilience.
Set against the backdrop of a sailing club, Jess’s encounter with Julian evolves from a passionate affair into a marriage marred by turmoil. Trevan deftly unfolds the narrative, allowing the early, subtle signs of Julian’s true character to simmer beneath the surface. This approach keeps readers engaged as the story gradually reveals the darker aspects of Julian’s personality. Jess, the protagonist, is particularly well-drawn. Her evolution from a young lover to a woman of courage and resolve is one of the novel’s highlights. Trevan navigates Jess’s transformation with a keen understanding of the intricacies of such a journey, offering a narrative that is both a cautionary tale and an uplifting account of overcoming adversity.
Now I See You delves into themes that might be sensitive for some but its overarching message is one of empowerment and hope. Trevan’s narrative is a compelling exploration of human resilience, particularly resonating with those who have experienced challenging relationships. It stands as a notable example of contemporary fiction that addresses serious issues while providing a source of inspiration.”

“Lauren Trevan’s brilliance in her debut novel shines bright with this gripping and emotional roller coaster. From the first chapter the story takes you on a journey that unfortunately will be an all too familiar story for many readers. The narrative is peppered with many heart in the throat moments throughout and a plot twist you do not see coming.
The vivid writing transports you into the heart of the lead character Jess where you almost feel like she is your long lost friend or sister. Brilliant from start to finish, and one you won’t be able to put down. Highly recommend!”

“The budding romance between Julian and Jess is a warm and inviting read, the reality of what happens thereafter makes it hard to put down. The author shines a light on what happens behind far too many closed doors, and through the myriad supporting characters, makes the reader question what role we ourselves might play in being part of the solution.”
